A mechanism that presents something to the mind and therefore a mechanism for producing intentional Acts. -Umberto Eco
The earlier Greek term acalma, an object of worship, stands apart from the later term eikzy, image.
This means that Greeks made a clear division between mental and retinal image. Mental images serve as collective associations (cult, ritual, symbol), while retinal images serve as eye candy (seduction, decor, persuasion). Oscillating between two opposites, image triggers the meaning and generates our relationship with art(work) and cult(ure).
Photography is a graveyard of light.
